Understanding Creativity
Where does it come from?
Salut Les Amis! This week I am going to dig a little deeper into the concept of Creativity and its how it is a part of my songwriting process. I have been reading the book “Becoming Creative” by Juniper Hill and it has yielded a lot of meaning to these creative moments that seem to arise out of thin air. So how does it work? Read on to find out! Also, if you would like to watch a video essay on this topic, you can click the link below! 📺️
What does music mean to me?
Making music is a way of life for me. I am at that point now where it has transcended far beyond it being a hobby or just a creative side gig. It is so much more than that! And that is why I write songs!
I write songs so as to not miss out on losing that moment of creativity. Its therapeutic in a way. I don’t know what I would do with my time otherwise but this is it, music means EVERYTHING to me! 🥰
If you think about it, music is so personal to every single one of us. whether you are a musician or not, we all have certain kinds of music that makes us feel so many different things. It has the power to move you.
And the amazing thing about the modern day music production is that with the internet, I am fully self sufficient in terms of marketing my music, and I have the freedom to do it at the pace that I want and in the style that suits me perfectly.
Throughout these years, my focus has only been on writing music. Write good music first and everything else comes after. I have all the resources that enable me to write music from the comfort of my bedroom and I realized there is no excuse for me to NOT have music out there. And thats what I intend to continue doing.
If I don’t play guitar, or work on a piece every day, I feel lost.
I did not start by thinking about writing an EP. I began writing these demos pretty much just after moving here and these were the demos that I had been writing for about 3 years at this point. So I decided to have something to show for as a body of work and start buildng from ther. I always had capabilities of recording my guitar if not for any other instrument.
I remember my first significant purchase after moving here was a guitar. I used to record something new every night after my classes. I was constantly listening to the bands that inspire me so it was like this continuous functional loop that kept going on inside my head. I remember waking up with drum grooves or riffs in my head sometimes and to this day everytime that happens, I absolutely cherish that feeling.
Where did the inspiration to write an album/EP come from?
It took a lot of time for me to understand the direction in which I intended to take these songs. Writing songs felt like a very natural expression for me. When I sit down and create something or write a chord progression, I feel like I am capturing my thoughts and feeling of that moment in my most honest voice.
I started playing guitar when I was 15 and it soon became my passion. I used to sing a lot in school and that is the only thing I have taken lessons for. But once I picked up the guitar, I pretty much figured out a way to teach myself via Youtube which soon transitioned to writing riffs, and that gave rise to songs.
I remember the time when I first heard the band, Chon and thinking that I really vibe with this stuff and it kinda just stuck with me. I dont think I thought about music or guitar playing the same way after that. And there have been many such incidents since then that just kept me wanting to dig deeper and test my own proficiency with the guitar being the main creative backbone of all the compositions. Individually, each of these songs represent one artist that I admire and I have tried my best to convey my admiration for them via these songs.
People often ask me where my creativity originates from. To be completely honest, I believe it's a blend of my experiences, my passion for music, and my innate curiosity. I've always been someone who seeks inspiration in the smallest of things.
My creativity is also fueled by the artists who came before me, those who dared to push boundaries and create music that was raw and real. Their courage to express themselves through their art is a constant reminder to me that creativity has no limits. When it comes to the origins of my own music, it's a bit of a complex puzzle. Some songs are born out of moments of deep introspection, some are inspired by a sudden burst of emotion, and others are the results of countless hours experimenting with different chords and rhythms.
But at its core, every piece of music I create is a reflection of who I am and what I'm feeling in that moment. It's a snapshot of my life, captured through the strings of my guitar and the notes of my songs. This process of creating, of pouring my heart and soul into my music, is what keeps me going. It's not always easy, and there are certainly days when the inspiration just doesn't come. But when it does, and when I see the impact my music can have on others, it makes all the hard work worth it.
As I continue on this journey, I am excited to see where my creativity will take me next. Because for me, creating music isn't just about producing songs, it's about expressing my truth and sharing a piece of myself with the world.
And that, in itself, is the true essence of creativity.
And as I look at the blank sheet in front of me, I can't help but feel excited for what's to come. Because the possibilities are endless, and the journey is just beginning.
This is the life of a musician. This is my life. And I wouldn't have it any other way. 😇
