Why Slow Practice is the Key & Other Hard Truths

Salut Les Amis!

Back in Philly and settling into the rhythm of things—so much happening, so much to share! From working on my new EP, refining my guitar practice, and navigating the balancing act of content creation, to reflecting on what I truly want from music, this week has been a mix of deep thought and exciting momentum. I’m also diving into new gear, jazz literature, and gearing up for live shows. Plenty of creative energy in the air!

As always, thanks for being here—ad-free, AI-free, and algorithm-free. Let’s dive in!

Here are 10 things worth sharing this week!

1. A New YouTube Video

2. Guitar Practice Reflection

A lot has changed since January, and one thing is clear—focusing on the basics is crucial. Reading Elijah Cole’s document and working with Erik Sayles has exposed my struggle with slow, fundamental practice. I tend to feel like slow technical work is a waste of time, but in reality, it’s the most important thing that will elevate my playing in the long run.

Elijah put me in my place when I admitted that I don’t enjoy practicing at slow tempos. His response? "That is your problem right there." The shift I need to make is deeper—it’s about willingness, repetition, and patience. Improvement doesn’t come from rushing; it comes from discipline. Enjoying playing guitar and getting better at guitar are now two separate things. The real joy comes later, when subconscious expression takes over.

3. What Do I Really Want From Music?

As I observed the different paths of musicians—some embracing fame, others preferring a quieter teaching life—I realized I might have been chasing the wrong thing.

Now, I lean towards not chasing anything at all. If all that matters is the present moment and the next day, my actions should align with what I truly want to do daily. If I have 8 hours for work, 8 hours for sleep, the remaining time should be spent on what fulfills me the most.

4. Just How Much Do I Love My New Guitar?

The D’Angelico is an absolute dream to play. Every note feels smooth, the tone is rich, and I’m rediscovering my love for the instrument through it. More on this soon!

5. Upcoming Shows

6. How I Feel About Not Playing as Many Shows in a Year

This past year, I haven’t played as many shows as I initially expected. But instead of feeling frustrated, I’m learning to appreciate the time I have to refine my sound, write, and work on my craft. Playing live is incredible, but preparing for those moments is just as important.

7. Mixed Audio from India Show

The mixed audio from my first India show at Gray Spark Audio is finally here! The wait was long, but the sound quality is unreal. I can’t wait to share it with you all. Release details coming soon!

8. Building Connections in Philadelphia

I’ve been making strides in Philly’s music scene under the guidance of Taylor Kelly. Networking, gigging, and learning from other musicians here has been an inspiring experience. Looking forward to what’s next in this journey!

9. New Gear & Guitar Meditation Videos

I recently got three new analog pedals, and my pedalboard is finally coming together! A full pedalboard walkthrough will be on my YouTube channel. It’s an exciting time to experiment with new sounds!

10. Diving Into Jazz Literature

I’m currently reading The Making of Kind of Blue and a collection of Jazz Anecdotes. These books are packed with insights and incredible stories about the jazz world. Here’s one of my favorite anecdotes: If you love jazz, these are must-reads!

Miles Davis once drove his Lamborghini through Manhattan in the ’70s, blasting music so loud that a cop pulled him over—only to let him go after realizing it was his own album shaking the streets!

Thanks for being part of the journey! This newsletter is an ad-free, AI-free, anti-algorithm space where I’ll continue sharing my creative process and personal reflections.

With peace and insight,
Ameya Deshpande
